I’ve been dancing since the age of 5. My parents put both my sister and I in ballet at a very young age, and it’s something that I kept on doing. I danced all the way through high school and went on to competitions and performances for school in funky outfits. I was trained classically but lately have gotten into more experimental dance, where I collaborate with different artists and create something completely unique.
In the mornings I do some stretches on my yoga mat, make myself breakfast and tea, and tend to my plants (I water them, clip them, talk to them and I usually move them around so they get the most sun.)
My all time favorite choreographer is Pina Bausch. I love her work so much, she’s made me feel something others don’t. I cry a lot when I see her company perform. She’s a constant inspiration in my work.

I usually go to thrift stores for clothes. I get really excited about different patterns and cuts and colors that I don’t see on a regular basis. I love shoulder pads and big long dresses. I’m very into classy womens dresses. I always prefer dressing up in a big gown if I can.

Arthur Rimbaud was introduced to me by an old roommate who is really into theater. We would read some of his poems and talk about them. I like how poetic, dark and deep he was as a writer at such a young age - how rebellious he was.

Sandy's favorite beauty products

I regularly apply moisturizer on my face after every shower. I also take great care of my hair by doing hair masks and applying leave-in conditioner. My hair is my main weapon. I’ve been looking for more natural botanical products, not the ones with chemicals and names you can’t pronounce. Dr. Bronners peppermint soap is my favorite.

Sandy's favorite records

Dust has become one of my favorite Brooklyn based bands. The first time I saw them perform I was blown away. the crowd went wild, moshing and dancing. They are very exciting to watch. Greem, their singer is this super eccentric artist and she wears very elaborate costumes and yells and screams and jumps into the crowd and makes you feel it. The beats are so upbeat and dancey yet dark and trippy. This is the first record I owned of them and whenever I wanna turn up I put it on and get my night started!

Sandy Recommends

Hotel Delmano is a cocktail bar in Williamsburg. It was my home for many many years. that place holds a lot of sentimental value to me. All the friends I've made there and all the memories. It takes you away and transports you to another place and time, you could be in Havana, Cuba or in Paris or in Spain. The entire place was hand built by the owners, every single detail is so beautiful from the bar to the walls to the wine glass holders. A lot of love goes into that place. They also have an outstanding wine list and a really good raw bar. I like to sit outside and have a bottle of wine with some oysters.

For nightlife, I go to Bossa Nova Civic Club. It's this dance club in Bushwick that supports the techno scene and hosts some of the best Djs and music producers today. A lot of international talent play there too and their environment is so welcoming. Everybody is dancing, it's a very eclectic scene.
