Meet Janelle Anne

“Hello” is tattooed on her arm if she ever has laryngitis when you meet. If not, you’ll probably talk about her transition from writing for Opening Ceremony to writing for BBDO—and how the latter is not a lot of writing at all. She’ll likely also mention her unexplained obsession with boxes, lipstick packaging, and French 75’s.

on her morning routine

I snooze several times. Then get up only because I’m so thirsty. Beyond washing my face, toothbrushing, and getting dressed, I have little time for anything else. Saturdays are different. Saturdays I have my ideal morning: sleeping in, coffee, breakfast, newspaper, and a ballet class.

on her path to advertising

After studying literary journalism, I eventually found advertising. It has the same artistic sacrifices as creative nonfiction with the paycheck to allow my love for New York to grow more. Only took four years to realize I suck at long-form.

on her favorite books

The classics read differently in collectible hardcover editions. Maybe because you’d never dare take these books on the subway so you’re likely reading them while horizontal. I recommend Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman, Tinkers by Paul Harding, The Infatuations by Javier Marias, Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen and BUtterfield 8 by John O’Hara.

on shopping and style

Once an OC girl, always an OC girl. Opening Ceremony is my go-to! I also love Uniqlo, COS, and vintage stores that shall not be named. (Because I want to keep them secret, sorry.) Aesthetic? I’d say it changes every day depending on mood.

on haircare

Hairstory’s products changed my life. Now I only use the New Wash and Hair Balm for perfectly disheveled, healthy hair—even for all the bleaching I’ve done. I wash my hair at night then, while semi-dry, throw it up in Miley buns with two spin pins. I wake up with lots of volume and waves.
