Kïa

Choreographer. Brentwood.

Born on Long Island, Kïa is a dance teacher/choreographer, photographer, graphic designer and social media guru of sorts for her close friends. She does the web content for a band called City of the Sun, and is involved with Haus Music Series, where she puts on events that bring together young musicians and artists in NYC.  When she's not creating, she's helping out with projects here and there whenever/however she can.

My dress code’s been simplified to a mostly monochromatic palate. I love playing with both masculine and feminine silhouettes, oversized pieces, prints, and layering. My Bailey hat and chunky boots are my go-to accessories. I often shop online — ASOS, Need Supply Co., and & Other Stories are top; Etsy is my favorite place to find cute lil rings. I also thrift a lot — it brings a bit of nostalgia into my wardrobe. Uniqlo is a must for basics, love the men’s tees.
I’m lucky that I usually work late in the day so I get to take my time in getting ready for the world. I’ll make some ginger tea and stay in bed with my phone and laptop for a bit, scanning the day’s headlines, checking emails, updating web ‘n social media. When my body decides to get moving I’ll do a simple work-out — glute and ab exercises, push ups if I’m in an especially good mood. Hydrate with lemon water with fresh cut ginger root or mint leaves from the garden.

I specialize in contemporary dance, which I think is in a sort of golden age. I love that it’s continuously evolving and bringing inspiration from other techniques into the fold. My favorite things to experiment with are storytelling and shapes... I look up to choreographers like Sonya Tayeh or TOKYO that push boundaries, like the lines between male and female roles in dance.
Music’s just always been around and it’s one of the main inspirations in my life. I played cello and percussion throughout high school, so I have a pretty decent understanding of what’s going on as far as rhythm and phrasing. It’s weird to describe in words but when I hear a song that clicks, choreography will just start happening in my mind. I’ve made up full pieces just listening to a song over and over on the train.

Kïa's favorite books

I think I’ve read through Howl dozens of times. I have a soft spot for the beat generation but this poem in particular resonates the most.

On the rare occasion that I feel like wearing makeup, I’ll cover any unevenness and shine with Palmer’s Eventone BB cream, + Make Up For Ever powder foundation. I recently discovered Sephora’s Pantone Color IQ service, which saved my life. Seriously. I’ll sweep a liquid liner and apply this bomb mascara by Benefit Cosmetics and I’m good to go.

I think I’ve finally nailed down a solid beauty routine, after changing it up for years. Of utmost importance is taking good care of my skin, which is prone to acne/blemishes — the keys for me are: 1. exfoliation (I use a scrubbing sponge and St. Ives Even & Bright scrub, made with natural exfoliants) 2. zit prevention (Clean & Clear Continuous Control acne cleanser works best since it has benzoyl peroxide rather than salicylic acid, which I’m allergic to) 3. hydration (stuck with the classic Ponds Dry Skin Cream, and the cute but effective eos mint lip balm.)
